Vegvísir Systems was founded in 2023 by Dmytro Shypovalov, CCIE #48777, a Network Engineer with over a decade of experience in Internet Service Providers in Ukraine and Ireland, and in Networking Vendors such as Cisco and Arista.
This aggregated experience in routing protocols, network design and architecture led to the development of Traffic Dictator – a controller for Segment Routing Traffic Engineering (SR-TE) and Egress Peer Engineering (EPE) which combines a rich feature-set, performance, and is easy to operate for any network engineer who is familiar with routing.
Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an innovative approach to networking whereby all advanced routing logic is handled by a controller software. This allows the network operator to have a wider choice of networking hardware, and deployment of new features requires just configuration or software upgrade of the controller; instead of upgrading or even replacing thousands of routers. However, the downside of many SDN technologies is that the controller becomes a single point of failure, often uses proprietary protocols and limits network scalability compared to the traditional approach. This makes some people sceptical about SDN.
Segment Routing (SR) is a Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology which finds a perfect balance between traditional networking and SDN. It relies on standard protocols such as IS-IS, OSPF and BGP to provide basic network connectivity. Then an optional controller can be deployed to enhance the network with Traffic Engineering capabilities, provide bandwidth reservations and Egress Peer Engineering if required. Open standard protocols are used for router<>controller communication.
The philosophy of Traffic Dictator is that the SR-TE controller is a control plane element, similar to a route-server in an IXP or an out-of-band route reflector. Therefore it should run standard protocols and provide interfaces similar to those found on routers, like industry-standard CLI for PoC testing and troubleshooting, and HTTP API and GNMI for network automation and integration with monitoring systems. Unlike other SR-TE controllers that look like over-engineered network management platforms, Traffic Dictator most resembles a router. So every network engineer will find it intuitively easy to use it.
